 PRANAYAMA  FOR ABDOMINAL DISORDERS

Yoga is basically a system of self treatment. According to yogic view diseases, disorders, and ailments are the result of faculty ways of living, bad habits, lack of proper knowledge of things related to individual's life and improper food. Since it is caused by an individual internal condition ,its cure also lies in the correcting those mistakes by same individual.

All the troubles that disturb the normal functioning of digestive system are termed as abdominal disorders. Commonly it cause constipation, acidity, indigestion, diarrhoea, stomach ache and various gastrointestinal disorders.

CAUSES OF ABDOMINAL DISORDERS

Nervousness, tension and various forms of stress and strain
Improper eating habits, such as over-eating, eating in irregular hours.
Eating adulterated and stale food stuff
These are easily curable through the yogic system of treatment.


THE YOGA SYSTEM OF TREATMENT REQUIRES

  1. Daily practice of asanas
  2. Proper diet
For correcting the disorders mentioned above, Pranayama with Rechaka and Puraka is very beneficial

PRANAYAMA (with Rechaka and Puraka)

Pranayama is special form of breathing exercise. It has following 3 steps 
  1. Rechaka (Exhalation)
  2. Puraka (Inhalation)
  3. Kumbhaka (Retention)
In this particular Pranayamas,there are only rechaka and puraka but no Kumbhaka(Retention of breath).
It is basically a diaphragmatic breathing. In this stomach is pulled in and forward in rhythmic way. It is very important to remember that the stomach is not pushed upward and downward.

POSITION

Sit down on the floor either in Padma Asana or in Sukha Asana. Hold the spine, neck and head absolutely erect. Look forward, straight at the level of your eyes. Stretch your arms and rest your wrist on the knees. Bring your thumb and index finger of each hand to meet together so that they form a circle and keep the other three fingers opened straight and joined together. Breathe normally.

STEPS FOR PRACTICE

  1. Exhale slowly through both nostrils and simultaneously pull your stomach inwards, i.e. contract the abdominal muscles to expel air from lungs.
  2. Having exhaled, hold yourself in the position for a second and then slowly start inhaling through both nostrils. Inhale as deep as you can
  3. After inhaling deeply, pause for second and then start exhaling again. Continue the process for ten to fifteen times.

DAILY PRACTICE

During first week of practice, do this exercise ten times afterward increase the limit to fifteen minutes but not more than fifteen times in a single day.

BENEFITS

It activates all the organs of the digestive system. Because of this internal activation, disorders of the digestive system are removed and corrected. Problems like constipation, dysentery, diarrhoea, gastric indigestion, and stomach ache are corrected.
