Human stupidity destroying environment
It seems dictum of nature that where there is life there is diversity and where there is diversity there is also similarity. Nature's variety is boundless when we walk through the woods, across a field, along a stream, through a zoo or wildlife santuary, one is impressed by the diversity of flora and fauna. The wide diversity of organisms lead to easily assist the processes common to all organisms. In the world of cellular organisms many of the same processes, forms and structures can be found and studied.
Man has faced one of the most horrible ecological crisis-the problem of pollution. When harmful substance or undesirable change comes in the air, land, water that may contaminate the environment or will harmfully affect the human life ,living conditions, cultural species, it result in Pollution.
It destroys environment in terms of quality and quantity.
most of us believe that if there are more people there is more sewage, more solid waste, more fuel being burned, more fertilizers and insecticides. However, scientist believe it is the wasteful aspect of our technology which strives always to produce more convenient products disposable items which pollute the environment.
Air Pollution
Atmosphere is the life blanket of earth so it is very important to save it and know the real cause for its pollution. The air is clean only when there is no gunk in it
Causes
Nature adds few creators of pollution such as pollen, hydrocarbons released by vegetation, dusts from desert, volcanic-Eruptions. Volcanic eruptions may eject large amount of gases and particulate matter.
Industries
Automobiles and domestic fuels contribute alot. The sources of emission in automobiles are the exhaust system, fuel tank and carburettor. They produces unburnt hydrocarbons, CO, and lead oxides which are the major causes of air pollution.
High promotion of undesirable gases such as sulphur dioxide and carbon monoxide.
Dust storms carries fine sand and favorable conditions for the growth of pollen, affecting people human health Some times automobiles are traced with aldehydes, esters, ketones and lead oxides, they are chemically active and combine to form smog in presence of light.
Effects
At gross level air pollutions causes contamination of the upper atmosphere and alteration of the weather and climate. carbon dioxide is the major constituent of air but increase in its concentration is leading to produce adverse effects like increasing temperature of the earth.(Green house Effect).Increased level of carbon dioxide increases green house effect and thereby increase the temperature of the earth. Only a slight temperature rise would cause the polar ice caps to melt and to cause rise in sea level submerging Number of major cities of the world.
The pollutants released from combustion of coal, plastics, ammonia from refrigerators, precooler systems causes emphysema in the lungs of humans. It may also result in cancer. In Plants enhanced level of UV radiations re feared to cause stunted growth, short, thick stems, smaller leaves, injury to various fruits, inhibition of pollen germination and pollen tube growth. Ozone layer is considered to be in major endangered range due to release of nitrogen oxides by aircraft flying at high altitudes. Ingestion of fluorides by animals causes abnormal calcification of bones and teeth.
How to control Air pollution
Laws for Controlling Air Pollution
Water pollution
Any Physical, Chemical or Biological substance when added in water bodies cause change in water that adversely affects its use by alive being. The great solvent power of water makes the creation of absolutely pure water a theory rather than practical .The distilled water we drink also contains dissolved gases .Therefore, need of the hour is to determine what quality of water is needed and how can we achieve that quality. About 40% death are caused worldwide by water pollution.
Water pollution is mainly caused by two types of impurities-dissolved and suspended. Dissolved impurities are gases and minerals .Suspended particles include clay, silt, sand ,microbes.
Causes
Pollutants may be domestic sewage and oxygen demanding wastes, infectious agents, plant nutrients, chemicals, pesticides, herbicides, detergents, minerals, sewage, Industries, Silt production, Agrochemicals, heat from power and industrial plants.
Effects
Contamination of freshwater by accumulation of detergents, sodium, potassium, calcium, causes dispersal capacity of the latter. Due to addition of sewage and waste oxygen level are depleted which are reflected in terms of BOD values of water. The quantity of oxygen in water is dissolved oxygen(DO). Decrease in DO value may result in increase in anaerobic bacteria. Highly enriched contaminants in water may lead to severe health hazards like Disease like Cholera, Malaria, Typhoid
water pollution result in the destruction of aquatic habitat. Eutrophication is the natural process occuring in lakes and ponds having rich supply of nutrients, as nutrients accumulate through natural succession. It causes excessive growth of microorganisms and aquatic vegetation.
How to avoid water pollution?
Engineering systems such as septic tanks, oxidation ponds, filter beds, waste water treatment plants and municipal sewage treatment plants are evolved in every city of the world for the removal of pollutants from sewage before it is tripped into the river or sea. Rivers should not be used for washing clothes or bathing animals also dead bodies should be made prohibited for release in it.
Harvesting of rainwater to meet water requirements
Dams and embankments must be created.
Water hyacinth an aquatic weed is prominently purifying domestic and industrial waste water. It efficiently accumulate heavy and radioactive metals. It absorbs nitrogen, phosphorus, and similar pollutants.
Noise pollution
It is simply defined as unwanted sound. It is defined as sound withpout value or any voice that is undesired by the recipient.
Noise pollution is caused by many machines man has invented like mills, motorbikes, trucks, motor vehicles, loudspeakers, social gathering etc. Noise can be measured by the sound meter and is expressed in a unit called Decibel(dB).
Causes
Effects
Traffic noise cause disturbances in the atmosphere which in turn interrupt the communications. It affects our mind, health and behavior. Sound of excessive pitch/intensity can also cause acute damage to ear drum. Noise is known to flush skin, constrict muscles, produce ulcers, sleep disturbance, stress, color blindness, high blood pressure and defects the sensory and nervous system.
How to avoid noise pollution?
Legislation and Public awareness are very essential. Nobody should be permitted to create noise The government should ensure the new machines that should be noise proof. There should be control noise at source by proper choice of equipment design modification, mounting and proper layout
isolation or use of baffles should be practiced.
Land pollution
One fourth of area is covered by land. Land is a earth which is occupied by people for shelter, occupation etc. The land pollution is caused by solid wastes and chemicals. Area around smelting and mining complexes are usually soiled by metals such as cadmium, zinc, copper.
Causes
The major cause of land pollution are the industries such as paper mills, sugar mills, power and heating plants, fertilizers manufacturing units, iron and steel plants, and so on. Mining, Erosion, Quarrying
Household garbage, Urbanization, Municipal solid waste, Uncontrolled land treatment, Burning open dumps ,deforestation and forest fire all lead to destruction of the land.
Effects of land pollution
The land cannot use to build houses.
Man cannot do farming
Ground water will be affected
Death of animals that inhabits the land
How to avoid land pollution
More land should be brought under farming
Reforestation
Waste matter should be disposed immediately
Prohibit the use of fertilizers and pesticides
integrated solid waste management
prevention of erosion and silting
good agricultural practices
Radio active pollution
Despite of advantage of nuclear as a clean energy, the big concern is the result from nuclear reaction, which is a form of pollution called radioactivity. Radioactive isotopes, or radionuclides, are the form of elements with unstable atomic nuclei that is they decompose in the form of alpha beta particles or gamma rays.eg cesium. iodine, krypton etc result from the atomic bomb fallout.
Causes
Effects
Radioactive phosphate ,cesium can readily accumulate in plants and animals through natural food chains. Isotopes may accumulate in human tissue as well as those of plants and animals. they can cause Ulcer, Swelling of bone joints, Cancer, Eye problems.
How to avoid radioactive pollution?
Avoid mining for uranium to a minimal
